Oral rehydration therapy was developed in Bangladesh, and it still saves more lives than almost anything else in the medicine box. One sachet in half a litre of safe water replaces the salt and glucose that diarrhoea and vomiting strip out.

Dissolve one full sachet in exactly 500 ml of safe drinking water. Stir until clear. Drink small sips over four hours. Discard anything left after 12 hours and mix fresh. Never make it with milk, soup or fizzy drinks, and never add sugar.
